This study guide Big Picture of the Bible-Old Testament is a true reflection of Ms Nichols' commitment and diligence to the study of the Word as well as her desire to share this knowledge with others. The workbook offers concise and accurate summaries of Bible stories and events in an easy-to-read bulleted format. It organizes events in historical sequence so the reader can see the continuity and overall message of the Bible. The illustrations, maps, timelines and appendices offer the readers an all-in-one study guide to supplement and encourage their study of the Bible. Throughout the study, with the use of icons, the reader is shown the continuous thread of God's redemptive plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. As a seminary student and Bible instructor, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this study and look forward to her publication of the Big Picture of the Bible- New Testament.

Just as the title of the book states, Mrs. Nichols' book provides parents and students alike with a "Big Picture" of the historical events of the Old Testament and helps one to clearly recognize the development of God's work of redemption through the coming of Christ Jesus in the first 39 books of the Bible. This study is appropriate for high school students to adults and is outlined in a concise, organized manner that could easily be presented as a semester course; and it is packed with sufficient content to stretch the study out to a one-year high school course.

The introductions to each Old Testament book and the special features provided within this text (i.e. timelines, glossary, answers to study questions) also make it convenient for a parent to break down the material into smaller segments to present the material to younger students or to discuss during family devotional time.

Another plus for parents: No preparation required and the only resource to have available is the Bible! For the word "education," Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language states...To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties. Deuteronomy 32:45-47, God commands parents: Take to heart all the words of warning I have given you today. Pass them on as a command to your children so they will obey every word of these instructions. These instructions are not empty words - they are your life! . . . Mrs. Nichols' study text certainly provides a parent great help in obeying this command. I look forward to the New Testament version of this study!

I have an attention deficit disorder that makes it difficult for me to concentrate and therefore I have always struggled to read the books of the Old Testament. The Big Picture of the Bible does such a great job of breaking down those Old Testament books into bite-size pieces that I can easily absorb. It even helps drive me back to read the individual chapters because I want to know more. When I understand the big picture, I can more easily absorb the details.

Thank you for your wonderful book. I highly recommend it to anyone who struggles to read the Old Testament.

May God richly bless you, your family and your ministry.

Whether you're a seasoned Bible reader, or just beginning to read and study, this guide is an invaluable resource to have side-by-side with your own Bible. Use it in personal study or with a group. The author has designed it to be a great resource in either setting.

The bullet points make it easy to understand, in plain English and the chapter reviews are concise, yet thorough enough so you won't miss the context of what you're reading.

I wish I had had this book years ago when I first started studying the Bible!

Big Picture of the Bible: Old Testament does exactly what it claims to do -- it offers a straightforward overview of the often hard-to-understand Old Testament. The layout is simple and intuitive, with clear bullet point explanations of each OT book. The book also contains plenty of charts, maps, and other visual aids that really help put the OT in its proper context. A slate of thinking questions rounds each chapter.

A few caveats about Big Picture are in order. One, this book is specifically intended as a "survey-level" book on the Bible for a general audience; those looking for in-depth study might want to consider, say the Kay Arthur inductive studies. Two, while the book stays pretty neutral theologically, it is written from an evangelical Protestant theological perspective and does not discuss, for example, the Catholic Apocrypha.

Overall, this book is a really solid option, especially for small groups or Sunday School classes. The book is also perfectly serviceable for those looking to do a solo study as well, although I think the book is really at its best when you've got someone to discuss it with.

This book delivers everything promised. It is great as a supplement, study guide and handy reference for the Old Testament. I particularly like the author's unique writing style that conveys biblical content in such a clear, concise and user friendly way. I was hooked from the start. The Introduction provided one of the best abbreviated overviews of the Bible, God and Salvation that I have read. I also enjoyed the format and was intrigued and inspired by each Chapter and the recommended Bible readings. The prayers, questions, review answers, maps, beautiful artwork and even the appendices were thought provoking and informative. This spiritual book is a winner!

I finished reading your book and really enjoyed it. As I mentioned, I read it as a study. So, I pulled the Bible and other resources if I wanted more information. It's a great study for those new to the Bible, but also offers greater insight for those who know it.

I really loved the references to Jewish religion (after all, duh) and the names of God. To me, the prophecies connecting OT to the coming of Christ is just essential to the spiritual growth of Christians, which validates God's perfect plan of salvation. The OT really helps you to see the essence and nature of God's love. It helps increase the faith we have in the Creator.

Last year, I was reading the OT and got as far as Isaiah, but realized that I wouldn't remember where all the prophets' stories fit in time. Now, I'll be able to read them in context to what was going on in history. I marked what kingdom they related to and what was going on with the people.

Hopefully, God will bless this message so that His people can be fed, strengthened and prepared to build His kingdom.

Every pastor knows if people will get into the Bible and get the Bible into them, their lives will positively change. Every pastor also knows many people are intimidated by the Bible. It is a pretty large book and hard to know where to start. On top of that some have been taught that only experts can understand it, and they know they are no expert. Lorna Nichols has provided a great service to the church by providing a clear, user friendly, yet "meaty" work that helps everyone see how it works and how it fits together. I have known Lorna for several years and am so glad to see she has put her keen mind, clear communication skills, and understanding of God's truth and people into a great work. I would heartily recommend it to new believers as well as those who have been following Christ for a long time.

My entire life I have been blessed to be around family and friends who value the Bible and encourage those around them to study it and learn more about it through the Church. I have always found the stories in the Bible fascinating, the people in it inspiring, and the wisdom I gained from it, priceless. I have always had a desire to read the Bible from beginning to end, but soon realized I couldn't read it like a novel, with a beginning, middle, and an end, as the Bible is extremely unique, and doesn't lend itself to be read in such a fashion. So when I came across the "Bible in a Year" book, I was excited at the idea of the Bible being broken up into small daily readings, that with discipline, I could finally read most, if not the entire Bible for once. There were times when I would miss reading on some days, then days turned into weeks, and before I knew it, I still never had a good picture of what the Bible in its entirety really meant.

I must say, I was fascinated and intrigued in church, when I first saw the sign for "Big Picture of the Bible" as a class. The name of the class spoke for itself and I knew right away this was my chance to receive a comprehensive overview of every book in the Bible.

I was thoroughly impressed from the very first day of the class, to the day the class ended, as I never prior to this time felt so inspired by the Bible, so connected to it, and so drawn into it by the numerous stories that demonstrated the type of faith that I strive to have each day. Lorna, the teacher of the class, demonstrated a deep understanding of each book of the Bible, and created an extremely simplified outline of the Bible the entire class would use to follow along during each class. It was great to have questions answered about the Bible by Lorna during class that you don't get when reading the Bible by yourself. I actually enjoyed the class so much and got so much out of it, I attended the class twice in consecutive sessions at one point. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is genuinely interested in learning about the Bible in its entirety in an interactive setting where questions are answered, thoughts and impressions are shared, and everyone involved is touched by and drawn closer to God through each class' inspirational learning experience.

The Big Picture of the Bible class had a great impact on me in the sense that it helped me to better apply the Word to everyday life and understand how similar we are to the people in the Bible, how God intervened and worked in their lives, and can still have a close and intimate relationship with us today. Many of the misconceptions I had were cleared up by this class. Many perceptions I had about particular people in the Bible or stories in the Bible I was able to look at differently after listening to other people's perception and ultimately Lorna's clarification on any and everything that ever came up.

This class will help anyone who attends by helping them to know God better through thoroughly organized and well-structured teaching that will broaden their knowledge of the Word and expand their understanding of how God works in the lives of others, and can therefore work in their lives. I believe the class has a way of spiritually re-energizing people to face the world stronger than ever before armed with a thicker shield of faith and a sharper sword of wisdom, that will lead one to believe s/he can conquer anything and endure any trial or tribulation with a new-found faith acquired through God's use of Lorna's inspirational teaching.

I was raised in a Christian family and knew all the classic Bible stories like Cain and Able or Noah's Ark, but could never understand the message of the Bible. I left the church for many years, returning off and on for brief periods and struggling to find an understanding and a relationship with God. There were so many parts of the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, that were incredibly boring and seemed pointless. So many points seemed to contradict each other. I would try to discipline myself to read the Bible regularly, but would quickly get discouraged and give up.

I had often heard of a loving, forgiving, just God, but the God I was trying to form a relationship with was very judgmental and expected nothing short of perfection, which I was unable to deliver. No wonder I was struggling!

I returned to church for the last time about 2 years ago and heard about the Big Picture of the Bible Class. It sounded like something that might help me; I had no idea what a gift this class would be. Through the class I began to understand how all the parts of the Bible relate to each other and that there is a point even to the boring parts. I began reading the Bible with encouragement from my fellow classmates. They would want to know what I was currently reading and congratulate me on my progress. Not only did I find a passion for the message of the Bible through this class, but I discovered a new picture of God and the grace he had to offer through Jesus Christ.

Since taking this class, my relationship with God has grown tremendously. I have gotten involved in different groups at church and just last month signed up for the parking lot ministry. Also, I was recently baptized by my class leader, Lorna Daniels Nichols, in honor of my new relationship with Christ.

This class served as a major turning point in my walk with God and I highly recommend it to anybody, whether you are familiar with the Bible or not, whether you are Christian or not. Everybody would be able to learn something new from this class, and I believe it would strengthen any relationship with God.

This study made the Bible come alive for us. We would encourage anyone desiring a better understanding of God's Word to use this study along with their Bible reading. It helped us to see how God provided and continues to provide for His creation with unconditional love even when we turn away from Him. Big Picture of the Bible lays out the historical timeline of the Bible and outlines what transpired in each book of the Bible within specific timeframes in a very clear and concise manner. It reinforces that God loves each and every generation of people. God rejoices when His people follow and accept Him as their Personal Lord and Savior. God is saddened when His people disobey Him. Big Picture of the Bible is easy to read and understand and is filled with information "essential" for understanding the Bible. I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting a clearer Picture of the Bible.

For years I tried reading the Bible. I didn't know how to go about doing it. I tried starting at the beginning and stopped in Leviticus--if you've ever tried reading Leviticus you know why. It didn't seem to apply to my life. I made it through the Gospels, but I wanted to know more.

Reading the Bible was intimidating. There was much I didn't understand. "Why would God allow slavery, concubines and polygamy? Why is the lineage of who begat who and counting of all the tribes so important anyway? Why are the people called Israel? Why would God want Abraham to sacrifice his son? Why does the Bible repeat some of the stories? Who wrote all these books of the Bible? Why isn't the Bible in chronological order? How are all of these animal sacrifices relevant in my life today? How can the seemingly harsh, punishing God of the Old Testament be the same God that forgives me because I have accepted Jesus as my Savior?"

I prayed for answers to these questions. God answered my prayer with the Big Picture of the Bible. With this information, I learned how the Bible is organized, how events in the Old Testament foreshadowed events in the New Testament, and of course the overall message (the Big Picture) of the Bible. The Bible finally makes sense to me. I get so much more out of my time spent reading the Bible now. I finally have the "Big Picture" and it has made a difference in my spiritual walk.

I highly recommend Big Picture of the Bible to all who want to know more about the Bible. If you feel God leading you to learn more about the Bible (or if you have questions you want answered), this book is for you!
